One of the most redeeming features of the culture of Amazon according to its CEO Jeff Bezos is the fact that it values experimentation. He says ‘we are willing to plant seeds and wait a long time for them to turn into trees.’ His criteria for these seeds is that they have to be meaningful to the company.
I love this as a guiding philosophy. You cannot predict in advance what will or will not work. But you still have to be trying new things all the time.
One of my frustration with leaders who say they want to be innovative is that they tell me they want to lead and break conventions but at the same time they do not want to be first. Can you see the contradiction? If you want to be a breakthrough leader of the future get into the habit of experimenting.
What three new things are you testing right now?
