In my experience there is nothing like being out in the field talking to and observing customers using your product or your competitors.
A session that we ran with the client and the customer recently illustrated this. The brand manager of a soup company saw first hand how difficult it was to open a dry packet soup with the ingrediants and hot water going everywhere.
The message–be among your customers, go with an open mind and look for their problems.
