The state of innovation

January 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment

It is interesting that  recent three major consulting companies report on innovation in such a unified way. But they remain spectators seemingly watching a game they don’t seem to understand nor which to play. Innovation at its heart is about creating and testing ideas in any activity. It is not something isolated  from the business–it is the business.

Yet big, fresh ideas seem to be still strangers to most leaders. They want to systemise something that at its heart has some chaos and imagination. Until management in large organisations start talking about and valuing innovation the leaders and consultants still will be left commenting.

Hi Ken, I have come across this dynamic repeatedly. The answer is “STATUS”. Perceived conferring of status sells motor cars, perfumes, restaurants, clothing, wines, etc. People, especially in large / prestigous organisations, cling to the status-quo to the point of suffocation. Innovation is a direct threat to their carefully crafted, but often set on shaky foundations, platform. Thanks for opening the window and letting the gust of fresh air sweep in. But I dread it might be too late. Too many in the room are brain dead through oxygen starvation.
